Mark

Six years after losing both legs to a work injury, Mark is standing tall again!

Mark is a gentleman in his fifties who has had his share of life’s challenges. Injured at work 6 years ago, he needed bilateral below knee amputations. In addition, he experienced a stroke that left him with a flaccid left side. While residing at White Oak Manor in Warren Ohio, he has been on and off of rehab for various reasons. During the summer of 2024, the team decided it was time to push for Mark to get bilateral prostheses and get moving again! Treatment initially focused on his ability to perform bed mobility, work out a contracted left knee and  work on static sitting balance without support. Given his flaccid left side, all of this was very difficult for Mark.

Thanks to the perseverance of his PT team, FRC PTA Bethany and PT Jessica, as well as his own determination, Mark is now able to stand on both of his prosthetic legs! Initially he needed a mechanical lift to transfer, now he can transfer with Moderate assist and is working towards even greater independence. Successes like these remind all of us of why we went into therapy in the first place. We are also reminded of the strength of the human spirit given a little encouragement and most of all, we are reminded not to take anything for granted. Thank you Mark and Team White Oak for inspiring all of us!
